Institute who encourage volunteerism

As a school student myself was interested in extra curricular activities> was with National Cadet Corps (NCC), the biggest youth organised in India, Civil Defence, and Indian Red Cross Society activities. Providing first aid for the casualty in case of air attack for which first aid centers under Civil Defence, Government of West Bengal was active before 1965.As a school student we used to operate the first aid center for 24 hours, we were paid honourium per day at the rate of 2.50 paisa (INR), it was a good amount for a school student for those days. The instructors of the first aid training courses were basically volunteers from St John Ambulance Associations (SJA) and Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS).

2. At Kolkata the first blood bank was established and run by IRCS which was located at the premises now the building of All India Institute of Public Health Hygine and Sanitation. There is a center of IRCS of West Bengal State Branch at Central Kolkata where Disaster Training Center (DRC) was very active during 1960 to 70, and all the instructors were volunteers. One of the instructor of this center was National Secretary General of IRCS. Two instructors who have given training for about 50 years on first aid, child care, hygiene and sanitation etc. as volunteers have written and published a book on fist aid, the volunteer has invested his terminal benefit from his employer for the publishing this title.

3. We do find the IRCS giving relief to the victims of any kind may be natural or man made disaster, the volunteers are organized up to block leveal. They are always there to extent their support when ever called for. The ICRS is the only society in India which is the part of International Red Cross Red Crescent (International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC). Earlier the Junior Red Cross (JRC) was active in our school education system. Through internet access to the information on IFRC or any other National Societies are easily available. Our neighboring countries Bangladesh Red Crescent (BRC), Sri Lanka, China and Nepal Red Cross are very active.

4. I got a chance to attain a programme at Syleth, Bangladesh in 1997 it was a programme organized by Bangladesh Scout, a rover Moot for the young people of Asia Pacific countries, we were under canvas, the BRC was providing support where an air craft was stand by there to evacuate any emergency case. The amateur wireless operators of Bangladesh were providing wireless communication and Indian such stations were constantly in touch with them.

5. A civil society of Salt Lake, West Bengal took initiative to contact school, college teachers, students and police personnel their views on Red Cross in to days’ context, the finding is that all the participants feel to extent their hands to the people who are in crisis.

6. Red Cross movement will be 150 years on next 8th May. I have seen one IRCS volunteer who used to keep a non poisonous snake at his residence to teach trainee on how to provide a snake bite casualty. I have the regards for the organization who has motivated the instructor and his seriousness of teaching methodology of his own a rare example in a present context.
